The Lighthouse hosts celebratory relaunch event

The Lighthouse hosted a celebratory event to relaunch their newly refurbished centre on Dickson Road.

Attendees, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Blackpool, braved the wet weather to join the celebrations, which showcased the revamped service as well as providing a morning of food and fun.

Part of Horizon, Blackpool’s drug and alcohol support service, The Lighthouse focuses on providing alcohol support. Their vital services include alcohol harm reduction advice, psychosocial interventions, liver fibro scanning, blood-borne virus testing, one to one support, group therapy and health and wellbeing assessments.

Duncan Swan, Recovery Practitioner at The Lighthouse, said: “We are all bursting with pride at the success of today’s re-launch. The amount of effort that all the staff have put in is testament to everybody’s passion and pride that we all feel about working at the Lighthouse”.

“Organisations like The Lighthouse are so vital”

During a ‘heart-filled’ speech, Mayoress Anne-Marie Hunter, said: “The Lighthouse is well-named because it really does provide a beacon of hope during what is a dark time for individuals and their families who are struggling with this problem”.

Following their refurbishment, The Lighthouse wants to continue growing as a service and develop treatment options to provide more support for the community.

Around 100 people a month are referred into treatment and almost 300 clients will receive professional support at any given time.

Blackpool has high levels of alcohol-related harm. Issues with excessive consumption is leading to increased health problems, disorder and violence and the amount of people being treated for alcohol addiction in the town is three times the national average.

Gemma Mukadam, Service Manager at Horizon, said: “Thanks to everyone for braving the wet weather to come to the launch.  It was a great opportunity to showcase our service. I was really proud of the enthusiasm, commitment and pride the team showed”.
