What is HIV?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It affects the immune system by targeting the body’s ability to fight infections.
If HIV is left untreated, it can develop into AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), where the immune system becomes severely weakened.
However, with modern treatment, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives.
How is HIV passed on?
HIV can be passed on through certain bodily fluids, including:
Blood
Semen
Vaginal fluids
Anal fluids
Breast milk
The most common ways HIV is transmitted include unprotected sex and sharing injecting equipment.
HIV cannot be passed on through casual contact, such as hugging, kissing, sharing food, toilet seats, or shaking hands.
Why is HIV testing important?
Many people with HIV do not have any symptoms for a long time. This means someone could have HIV without realising.
Testing is the only way to know your HIV status.
